Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas
General Information

Bexar Land Trust, doing business as Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas, was established in 1998 as an urban land trust conserving the natural environment for the public good. Our work is about people, nature and connections to land. We provide service three programming areas.

Green Spaces foundation is our Land Conservation Program that preserves open or undeveloped land through individual conservation easements, and land management practices at Green Spaces owned properties. Our Land Conservation efforts have protected over 150,000 acres over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, conserved 309 acres of land around military installations for the security and safety of the Air Force mission, and shaped Bulverde Oaks Nature Preserve into a sanctuary amid the urban sprawl of San Antonio. The Urban Land and Waters Program connects citizens to the land through gardening.  The program funds and enables the establishment of community gardens, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas. The result is an outreach that is reshaping the community food system through a network of 25 active gardens across San Antonio. The Green Spaces network is the only one of its kind in San Antonio. The Picture Your World Youth Photography Program connects youth to the natural world with the camera lens. Through weekend workshops, outreach programming for Title 1 elementary schools and a city-wide nature photography exhibition, Picture Your World encourages a creative approach to digital photography while advocating a personal connection to nature that fosters environmental stewardship.

San Antonio has a population of 1.4 million with 1 million new residents expected to locate here in the next decade.  As our region becomes more urbanized and access to the natural world becomes more limited, our mission to sustain the natural environment and enhance urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement and education is ever more critical.
