Description:

Did you know EVERY Golden-cheeked Warbler born on Planet Earth is a Native Texan?? It’s true! Learn about these federally-listed endangered songbirds who come to Government Canyon every Spring to nest, mate and start their families here in the Texas Hill Country.

Join a park ranger to (hopefully*) experience these amazing birds in person. If possible, bring a pair of binoculars, but we will have a limited number of loaners on hand.

*Note that we will scout locations in advance but can't guarantee everyone will see a golden-cheeked warbler!

This hike is limited to the first 12 people to check in with the ranger, so plan to arrive on time. Ages 10 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. We'll hike around 3.5 miles.

Registration is NOT required for this hike. Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 12 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

Meet near the Rainwater Towers at the Visitor Center.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
